The 10 Best Beaches in Guanacaste (Locals' Edition)

11 min read · Updated 2026-05-13

Guanacaste has dozens of beaches and they're not interchangeable. Some are perfect for swimming, others for surfing, others for sunset only. This is the local list — the beaches we'd actually send friends to.

1. Playa Tamarindo

The main beach. Long, sandy, surf-friendly. Lifeguards on the central section. Best for: learning to surf, sunset walks, day-long beach time with restaurants nearby.

2. Playa Langosta

Tamarindo's quieter southern neighbor. Calmer for swimming on the protected end, surf on the open end. Best for: low-key beach days, sunset, families.

3. Playa Grande

Across the estuary north of Tamarindo. World-class surf, almost no development, leatherback turtle nesting October–February. Best for: surf, quiet, photography. Drive 25 minutes around the estuary or take the boat shuttle.

4. Playa Conchal

One of the few beaches in the world made of crushed shells. Calm, turquoise, snorkel-able. Inside Reserva Conchal — public access via a short walk from Brasilito. Best for: families, swimming, snorkeling.

5. Playa Avellanas

South of Hacienda Pinilla, end of a dirt road. Long open beach with consistent surf and the legendary Lola's beach restaurant. Best for: surf, lunch, golden-hour photos. UTV/ATV-friendly access.

6. Playa Negra

Further south, world-famous reef break (the one from Endless Summer II). Best for: experienced surfers and sunset.

7. Playa Flamingo

White sand crescent backed by a marina. Calm water, sunset bars, sport fishing. Best for: catamaran trips, calm-water swimming.

8. Playa Mina (Hacienda Pinilla)

Inside Hacienda Pinilla — accessible to guests of the resort and renters with fast delivery access. Wide, often empty, perfect golden sand. Best for: privacy, families.

9. Playa Brasilito

Local fishing village just north of Conchal. Grey-sand beach, real Tico atmosphere, fish restaurants. Best for: a more authentic afternoon away from tourist zones.

10. Playa Ventanas

Lesser-known cove between Brasilito and Flamingo. Calm, swimmable, snorkel-able. Best for: a quiet weekday beach day.

What to bring to a Guanacaste beach

  • Reef-safe sunscreen (regular sunscreen damages reefs and is restricted in some areas).
  • Water — most beaches have no kiosks.
  • Cash for beach restaurants (some don't take cards).
  • Dry bag for phones and keys.
  • Reef shoes for rocky beaches like Negra.
