Tamarindo faces almost due west — sunset is the daily event. These are the spots locals actually pick, in rough order.
1. Playa Langosta point
The southern point of Langosta beach, where the rocks drop into the surf. Quieter than Tamarindo's main beach, dramatic foreground for photos, easy walk or short cart ride from town.
2. Playa Tamarindo north end
Walk to the estuary end of the main beach. You get the surfers in silhouette, the river mouth reflecting the sky, and Playa Grande as a backdrop.
3. Pangas Beach Club
Restaurant on the estuary side with a perfect west-facing deck. Drinks, table service, no need to commit to dinner.
4. Sandbar Sports Bar
Open-air rooftop on the main strip with one of the best high-up sunset views in town.
5. Tamarindo estuary lookout
The pulled-over viewpoint on the road around the estuary. Quiet, unmarked, locals only. Pull off the road, walk 30 seconds to the cliff edge.
6. Playa Avellanas
If you have a UTV or ATV — sunset at Avellanas with dinner at Lola's is the single best evening you can plan in Guanacaste. Leave Tamarindo by 4:30 pm in dry season.
Practical tips
- Sunset is faster than you think — 5–10 minutes from horizon kiss to dark. Be in position 20 minutes early.
- Bring bug spray after sunset. Sand flies (chitras) appear at dusk.
- If you're driving back after dark, your golf cart needs working lights — all of ours do.
