Most international visitors to Tamarindo land at Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) in Guanacaste. This guide compares the ways to cover the trip from the airport to the beach.
Before you choose
For a shorter overview inside a full trip plan, see the airport section of our Tamarindo travel guide; for vehicle rentals in the airport area itself, see our Liberia Airport area page.
The route is about 65–70 km (roughly 40–45 miles) via Route 21 through Huacas and Villarreal, on a flat paved road. The drive normally takes about 1 hour 15 minutes to 1 hour 30 minutes, and up to 2 hours in peak holiday traffic.
Prices change — confirm with the operator before booking.
Private or shared shuttle
A pre-booked shuttle is the simplest option for most visitors: a driver meets you after arrivals and takes you to your accommodation. Private shuttles carry only your group; shared shuttles make several stops. A shared shuttle costs about $30–$50 per person. A private transfer costs about $100–$135 per vehicle one-way, for up to 4–6 passengers.
Taxi
Taxis are available at the airport. Agree on the fare before you leave, or confirm that the meter is used. Fares to Tamarindo at the airport stand are about $100–$160; confirm the fare before boarding.
Rental car
A rental car makes sense if you plan day trips inland. In high season an economy car costs about $40–$60/day, plus $15–$30/day of mandatory liability insurance; green season rates are about 30–40% lower. Headline online rates exclude that insurance, so compare the all-in price. Once you are settled at the beach, many visitors find they don't need a car for short local trips — read how to get around Tamarindo before deciding.
Public bus
The public bus is the budget option but the slowest. Transportes La Pampa runs from the Liberia town bus station for about $4–$5 (around ₡2,000), roughly hourly from 3:50 AM to 6:10 PM; a direct trip takes about 1 hour 40 minutes. Check the schedule before you travel, especially with luggage.
Your golf cart, waiting at your villa
Golf carts are for local driving only — never on the highway from the airport. The easy way is delivery: book your golf cart before you fly, travel from LIR by shuttle or taxi, and find your cart delivered to your villa. See our golf cart rental guide or browse our fleet.
